Abbi Patrix has been exploring the art of story-telling for the past twenty-five years, and he continues today without a halt, treading the path on a search for continual development. His work is at the cross-roads of theatre, music and movement, enriched by multi-disciplinary material, on a permanant quest for new ways and voices to enrich the form of story-telling : an art which is developping today with great impetus in many different places in France and abroad. In his productions Abbi Patrix uses both personal and contemporary forms, which he constructs using different sources : traditional stories, life-stories, diaries, his own memories and literary texts. In 2002, he questioned the world and our intimate relationship to it, in the production To the Ends of the World, in which he confronted material from traditional stories the world over, with extracts from epic tales and contemporary stories. In 2005 Abbi Patrix revived one of his founding stories, a Norwegian tale of marvel, The Companion, and used it to render the mythical dimensions of trolls in the imagination of today's european audiences. Working either as a solo performer or with other artists, Abbi Patrix has a taste for mixing the spoken word with other disciplines : as in Parole in 2000, in which he undertook a dialogue on stage with a dancer and a deaf actor. In 2006, he worked in a public arena : The Garden of Origins , and brought together story-tellers and mimes in a collective outdoor performance. In his new show, The Doors (2007), he is playing the piano for the first time on stage, distilling a new language from the music and stories. Going on to explore new territory, he led a team of collector/story-tellers to create Fragments of Stories in 2001 : based on the conviction that a project collecting life-stories within a newly-built town, Evry near Paris, would express the multiple identity of its new inhabitants. This production inspired others of a similar kind in other towns, such as TransOral Express in Cergy-Pontoise, in which a new group of story-tellers worked together, led by Abbi Patrix. This will result in a new production in 2008 : an event which includes the various forms of stories collected. Abbi Patrix is Artistic Director of the Compagnie du Cercle ; he also co-directs La Maison du Conte with Michel Jolivet (an Arts Centre dedicated to the art of story-telling in all its forms), from where he has run " Le Labo " for the past three years : a space for research and creation, which brings together twenty or so story-tellers : they work together with a new artistic aim, mid-way between an individual and a collective form. |
